SKU generator questions

How to create readable internal product codes that remain useful in spreadsheets, labels, and scanners.
What is an SKU, and is it the same as a barcode?

An SKU is an internal product code chosen by your business. A barcode is the machine-readable image that can encode that SKU. BarcodeMaker can turn an SKU into Code 128, but creating an SKU does not register a GTIN or make it a retail identifier recognized by other companies.

How should I structure an SKU?

Use a short category, a meaningful variant, and a sequence, such as MUG-BLUE-001. Keep the order consistent across products and avoid details that change often. The generator normalizes the result for Code 128, but your team should still document what each segment means.

Can I generate many SKUs at once?

Yes. Choose a starting number and create up to 100 codes in one batch. Review the list before adding it to inventory, especially when an existing spreadsheet already contains codes, because the generator cannot see codes stored outside this browser.

Does the generator guarantee that every SKU is unique?

It creates a consistent sequence from the information you enter, but uniqueness still depends on your existing records. When products already live in another system, compare the generated list with that source before printing. The local inventory sheet can prevent duplicates among products saved here.

Can these SKUs be scanned after printing?

Yes, when they are encoded as Code 128 and printed with enough size, contrast, and quiet space. Create the labels, print one test page at actual size or 100%, and scan labels from several positions before committing paper and stock to a full batch.
